osCommerce is a free, open-source shopping cart platform that can be expanded and customized using available modules and additional programming.

osCommerce is ideal for small to medium sized online stores and those with a lower budget.

Strengths

  • Fairly inexpensive to implement and operate
  • Can be customized to include features such as e-mail marketing, special pricing, suggestions of related products, product reviews and more

Weaknesses

  • Requires installation of many add-on modules for most implementations as core functionality is not a robust as other solutions
  • Not as search engine friendly as other ecommerce platforms
  • No direct support—must rely on community for support
