Managing 15,000 Products Without Creating Chaos

E-commerce websites are built to sell products.

Erie Quilt Art’s challenge was a little different: they needed to help their wholesale customers navigate, search, and order from a catalog of roughly 15,000 quilting and sewing products.

As their business grew, so did the complexity of their product catalog. We didn’t just want to simplify their offering; we wanted to make its depth easier to explore. The goal was to create a shopping experience that worked the way wholesale customers actually buy, while giving the Erie Quilt Art team a platform that could scale alongside the business.

So here’s what we did…

First, we tackled the site’s structure. With thousands of products spread across countless categories, information architecture became critical. We rebuilt the navigation and category structure from the ground up, making it easier for customers to browse, find, and compare products without feeling overwhelmed.

Next came product filtering. A quilting blade isn’t purchased the same way as a sewing needle, so we restructured the product data model to support highly specific filters based on product type. Customers can now narrow results by size, dimensions, application, handedness, and other criteria that matter to their buying decisions.

We also built wholesale-focused functionality directly into the platform. Features like bulk ordering, order history, saved carts, quick reordering, account applications, and hidden wholesale pricing help customers purchase more efficiently. Behind the scenes, ERP integration and live inventory data keep everything accurate and synchronized.

When your catalog grows, adding more products isn’t the hard part. Helping customers find the right products is. Smart information architecture and filtering often have a bigger impact on sales and usability than adding new features. And that was our focus with Erie Quilt Art.
