When Shopify Meats a Real Butcher Shop

When Shopify Meats a Real Butcher Shop

Moving an online store to Shopify is usually pretty straightforward. Moving a butcher shop? That’s a different story.

Urban Butcher came to us through a referral from a longtime client, CRMR (we did a bunch of websites for them, including Post Hotel & Spa).

Urban Butcher was already making the switch to Shopify POS for their retail operations, so bringing their website onto the same platform made perfect sense. For Brad, our developer, the challenge wasn’t the migration itself; it was making Shopify work for a business where many products don’t have a final price until they’re cut, weighed, and packaged.

And here’s what we did…

The first step was migrating the entire website from WordPress to Shopify, bringing Urban Butcher’s online store and retail operations under one roof. With inventory, orders, and POS now working together, the team spends less time juggling systems and more time serving customers.

While we were there, we gave the site a light UX refresh. We weren’t trying to reinvent the brand; just smooth out the experience, modernize a few interactions, and make shopping feel a little more effortless.

The most interesting part of the project was building a custom workflow for weight-based products. Customers check out using an estimated price, then once the order is prepared, the final weight determines whether a small adjustment is needed. Behind the scenes, we configured Shopify to make this process simple for staff while keeping it transparent and intuitive for customers.

Sometimes the right platform isn’t enough – you have to make it fit the business. Every industry has unique operational challenges, and good development is about adapting technology to real-world workflows, not forcing businesses to adapt to the software.

Was the project a success? We think so. But here’s what the client had to say:

“Great communication from Brad. Kept to timelines. [The team is] always willing to look for solutions. This project went amazingly – no real areas of improvement.

If you’re considering Shopify but wondering whether it can support the way your business actually operates, let’s have a conversation.
