Replatforming a specialty butcher shop to Shopify with design refresh, custom workflows for weighted products and in-store operations.
Urban Butcher came to us through a referral from a longtime client CRMR (we did a bunch of websites for them, one of which is Post Hotel & Spa).
UB wanted to transition its retail point-of-sale system to Shopify and wanted its eCommerce experience to operate on the same platform. So it made sense for our team to bring the website and in-store operations together to simplify inventory management, purchasing, and day-to-day administration while also creating a more consistent customer experience.
One of the biggest challenges was supporting products sold by weight. Unlike standard eCommerce products, each order is only an estimate until the meat is cut, weighed, and prepared. This meant developing a workflow that could accommodate final price adjustments while remaining simple for both customers and staff.
Our developer, Brad, replatformed the website from WordPress to Shopify, giving Urban Butcher a unified eCommerce and retail ecosystem. By aligning the website with their new Shopify POS, the business now benefits from a more streamlined operational workflow and a platform that’s easier to manage.
While the project’s focus was the platform migration, Brad also gave the website a subtle visual refresh. Rather than a complete redesign, we refined the existing user experience, smoothing out inconsistencies while maintaining the familiar look customers already knew.
Working alongside our client’s POS implementation, we configured the Shopify backend to support the business’s unique operational requirements. This made the website, inventory, and purchasing workflows work seamlessly together.
The most technically complex aspect of the project was developing a process for weighted products.
Because customers purchase items before they’re cut and weighed, the online order acts as an estimated transaction. Once products are prepared, the final weight determines whether a small refund or additional charge is required.
We developed backend workflows that make this process straightforward for Urban Butcher’s staff while keeping the purchasing experience simple and transparent for customers.
Urban Butcher now operates on a unified Shopify platform that connects its website and retail operations into a single, streamlined system. Customers get to enjoy a smooth online ordering experience, while staff get simplified workflows that support one of the most unique aspects of the business: selling premium products by weight.
Great communication from Brad. Kept to timelines. [The team is] always willing to look for solutions. This project went amazingly – no real areas of improvement.
